Travel diary

Extract from "Cantate a Jean-Bart" composed for the inauguration of Jean Bart statue in Dunkirk on 7 September 1845 and performed by 200 singers. Words by J.Fontemoing, music by D.Riefenstahl.

Jean-Bart, salute to your memory!
You filled the universe with your exploits,
Your appearance alone commanded victory,
And, without rival, you reigned over the seas:
To the grave, France, adored mother!
Proud and jealous to imitate her valour,
We shall defend your sacred banner
On the ocean that was her field of honour.

Refrain :
Jean Bart! Jean Bart! The voice of the nation
Repeats your glory and your immortal name,
And the city that gave you life
Will erect your statue as an altar!

A child of the people, he conquered his nobility
By his sword... oh glorious destiny!
And this sword, in the days of his distress,
Saved France by giving her bread:
A sublime fire blazed in his courage;
The axe in his fist, facing death,
He dashed forward, terrible!
To the boarding, Like a lion in the midst of battle.

Refrain

Let us discover... Sculpted by genius,
Jean-Bart is reborn in this eloquent bronze.
And you who were the idol of his life,
His sword still, O France! Defends you.
If the enemy who turns pale at the sight of him,
In his delirium dared to outrage us,
From the pedestal that bears his statue,
He would descend armed to avenge us!
